Institute of Environmental Engineering (APINI)

The Institute of Environmental Engineering (APINI) was established in 1991 as an independent research unit affiliated to Kaunas University of Technology. In 2000, APINI established an office in Vilnius. APINI was the first institution in Lithuania, which started to solve environmental problems. APINI gained international recognition by doing environmental research and creating, applying innovative training methods. APINI employees actively participate in various international projects and programmes, do research and corporate with universities from foreign countries. Main activities of APINI are: scientific research and their implementation; education of master and doctoral students; participation at the nation and international projects; education, trainings, knowledge spread and consultation of the business companies on the sustainable development and environmental topics; participating in international and national experts’ organizations activities. The majority of APINI works give direct influence to sustainable industry development and policy’s formation of environmental protection. Employees have close academic collaboration contacts with many Lithuania’s and foreign industry’s companies and organizations, as well as with universities, other institutions and also with Lithuania’s institution of government and society. In order to show how principles of sustainable development can be applied to everyday work, APINI accepted a decision to represent social responsibility report 2012 to the society. It is planned that this activity will be continuing. Restaurant group “FORTAS”

The first “FORTAS” restaurant was opened in 1996. The restaurant is outstanding for its style, safety, democratic environment, excellent specialties, wide range of salads and main courses, well-balanced selection of wine, and friendly service. In 2003, FORTO DVARAS restaurants offering traditional Lithuanian food were launched. They were the first in Lithuania to offer certified meals from the Gastronomic Heritage Foundation. These are meals made in the traditional way, using products of local origin. You can find here as much as 12 kinds of cepelinai (the potato meal resembling a Zeppelin in its shape).  Today, “FORTAS” Group owns 5 restaurants FORTAS, 9 traditional Lithuanian cuisine restaurants FORTO DVARAS and restaurant TERRAZZA. Lithuanian sustainable restaurants and suppliers association (LARTA) has awarded the restaurant group “FORTAS” (with the restaurant Terrazza ahead) as the most responsible restaurant of the year 2013. It has been awarded in the nomination for the greatest advance, transparency and honest approach to the client. The restaurant Terrazza takes social responsibility in their everyday activities, involving every employee developing social responsible restaurant. There are included more seasonal dishes, produced from the products of local farmers, there is refused of the vanishing species of the fishes and no GMO products or synthetic additives are used in the menu of restaurant group “FORTAS” and restaurant Terrazza. Pharmaceutical company “Aconitum”

Pharmaceutical company "Aconitum" is the leading company of pharmaceutical and nutraceutical manufacturing in Lithuania. JSC “Aconitum” is innovative and fast growing pharmaceutical company which is successfully operating for over 13 years. Certificate of Good Manufacturing Practice, excellent production and storage premises, high staff qualifications are important factors in ensuring the exceptional quality and safety of production. The Cheese-Makers’ Home. Lithuanian Association of Cheese Eaters and producers “Viva Sol”

In spring 2010, the Cheese-makers’ Home – a not-for-profit company has been established with the help of a young French couple who are professional restaurateurs. It’s a cooperative of sorts — four small farms raising sheep, cows and goats to produce the milk and one French-trained cheese maker to produce the cheese. The Cheese makers’ Home sells locally produced cheeses, bakes bread, and cooks food with the neighbour’s vegetables. Apart from four local cheese-makers, the institution involves other village people, including an accountant, a waitress, a vegetable grower, a milk producer and maintenance workers. Besides offering food through the restaurant and shop, the Cheese-makers Home also organizes concerts, training, social activities and serves as a meeting place for the villagers. Some activities are also organised to present “Viva Sol” and its activities, which is much more easily done in this context. The Cheese makers' Home, certified by the Lithuanian Association of Cheese Eaters and producers “Viva Sol”. “Viva Sol” is an association of cheese eaters and producers, established in autumn 2006 by 2 farmers and 2 eaters. “Viva Sol” emerged as a response to the growing need to re-engage producers and eaters. It advocates small and responsible farming that can generate economic, ecological, and social added value. In spite of being quite small and with no permanent staff, “Viva Sol” has already developed a wide range of activities, over several areas of work: Farmers’ Markets/ Cheese Market in Vilnius; Vegetable Box Scheme - In 2010, two vegetable growers started a subscription scheme, with weekly delivery of vegetable boxes to 10 households; Environmental agriculture. Together with the Baltic Environment Forum (BEF), “Viva Sol” has started an initiative called ‘A Different Farming’20. They have organised a network of ten farms to demonstrate the additional value to farm produce given by environmentally friendly farming practices. Winter Activities Complex “Snow Arena”

Today Druskininkai is a modern international tourist resort which is visited annually by more than 200 thousand tourists from all over the world. The health-improving and recreational rest services are enriched here with a wide variety of different entertainment for visitors. This is the only city in the region where the winter and summer activities may be combined all year round. In Druskininkai there is one of Europe's largest aquapark where summer never ends, whilst the other side of the river Nemunas an oasis of winter – the winter entertainment complex “Snow Arena”. The health-improving and recreational rest services are enriched here with a wide variety of different entertainment for visitors. Druskininkai “Snow Arena” – the only winter activities complex in the Baltic countries that works all year round. Three skiing slopes and snowboarding park are arranged in the area of 8 hectares. Snow in Snow Arena is made by using PowderStar Series technology. Water and air are the only ingredients of the snow, no chemical or bacteriological additives are used, so the snow is 100% natural. The snow making system in Snow Arena is fully automatic; it can be controlled and managed remotely. Interior design exhibition centre “Interjero erdvė”

“Interjero erdvė” (eng.: Interior space) is an interior design exhibition centre which displays high quality nonstandard products made by Lithuanian (and foreign) designers (beginners and professionals) in cooperation with manufacturers. It is a unique place in Lithuania for presenting solely Lithuanian designers and manufacturers’ works and interior solutions. “Interjero erdvė” is a part of the enterprise JSC “Interjero elementai” which specializes in veneer services and production of furniture and interior components. “Interjero erdvė” was established in 2011 to present the products of “Interjero elementai” and it, therefore, serves as a marketing tool. The showroom has not formalised its social/environmental activities; therefore, it has not obtained any quality/environment, etc. management certificates. However, many of its activities could be attributed to CSR actions: environmentally-friendly practices/eco-management, caring of workers’ health and safety, securing no discriminatory practices (equal opportunities, prevention of mobbing, etc.), non-economic incentives, initiatives towards the community (donations, sponsorships, corporate voluntary work, etc.), etc. Project “Didėja”. In 2011, “Interjero erdvė” started the project “Didėja” with the aim to foster design – a branch of creative industries – and to develop Lithuanian design market. The still on-going project seeks to unleash the potential of the dialogue between young Lithuanian designers’ creativity and Lithuanian manufacturers’ capabilities in order to create innovative local products. “Interjero erdvė” is organizing an event “Dizaino savaitė” (“Design week”) in Kaunas city. It is dedicated for the dissemination of the new design ideas and is performed in different spaces: from the universities, to the windows of the markets. The director of “Interjero erdvė” is giving the lectures to the students without any material compensation in order to introduce with the newest interior materials and to pass the knowledge. Water supply company “Klaipėdos vanduo“

The main goal of JSC “Klaipėdos Vanduo” is reliable water supply to its customers. “Klaipėdos Vanduo” also works treating wastewater to meet environmental regulations in order to manage and provide high quality services that satisfy customer needs. The company's history began in 1902. Today “Klaipėdos Vanduo” takes care of water production, cleaning, and supply to citizens of Klaipėda. At present Klaipėda City operates 21 wastewater-pumping stations, all of which are automated and controlled from the panel located at the main pumping station. The water-supply system consists of 383,3 km of water-supply mains, distribution and quarter networks in Klaipėda City and Gargždai. Nearly all city water-supply lines are connected into a ring network suitable for fire extinction and for uninterruptible water supply to the consumers. The sewerage network of the city is dedicated for collection of home and industrial waste water. The network consists of 370,2 km of sewerage pipelines. Social responsibility – activities for the community: “Klaipėdos Vanduo” is a sponsor of various city festivals, awards and maintains the exploitation of the city fountain and parterre. There are organised excursions to the company since 2001 in order to introduce the community with the activity of the company and to educate the pupils about the water supply and treatment technologies. The university students have possibility to make an internship in the company. The activity of the company is based on the implementation of quality and environmental standards in order to meet the requirements of the clients and to decrease the environmental impact. Oil terminal “Klaipėdos nafta”

Stock Company “Klaipėdos Nafta” was founded in 1994. It was entrusted the functions of reconstruction executive of the Oil Terminal which has been in operation since 1959 in Klaipėda Seaport, and later on the Company became operator of the new Terminal. Reconstruction of the Oil Terminal started in 1995 with demolition of the old facilities and construction of a new object. The reconstruction was carried out without interruption of transhipment activities and was completed in 2002. Today SC “Klaipėdos Nafta” is one of the most up-to-date terminals in Europe. Its core activity is to trans-ship exported oil products from rail tank-cars into tankers, provide Lithuania with imported crude oil and oil products which are shipped to Klaipėda port by tankers. The following environmental components are affected by Company's production activities under normal conditions: atmospheric air - by emissions of volatile compounds (VOC) while handling crude oil and oil products; by carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) from the boiler-house operated by the Terminal; surface water - by the water collected from the Terminal and accumulated in the Waste Water Treatment facilities and discharged into Klaipėda Harbour entrance channel. The Company utilizes "the most accessible methods of production" and constantly implements technical measures for reduction of emissions and the amount of wastes, performs adequate routine maintenance of the equipment. The results achieved evidence that “Klaipėdos Nafta” pollutes environment within the allowed norm limits, wastes emission is less than the state permissible amounts, and the established taxes in respect thereof are paid in due time. Klaipėda State Seaport Authority

State Enterprise Klaipėda State Seaport Authority is the main transport hub and the gate of Lithuania to the world. Before the restoration of independence of Lithuania in 1990 there were two separate ports: sea commercial port and fishing port. In the territory of the port there were about 20 enterprises and organizations that belonged to different authorities. In 1991, Klaipėda port authority was founded by the Decree of the Government of Lithuania and in 1992 Klaipėda port got the status of state seaport. The state manages all those objects and assures their activities via Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, the main objective of which is – to permanently develop the port, maintain its competitiveness and increase cargo handling volumes. Independent stevedoring companies, ship building and ship - repair yards and other companies the activities of which are connected with the port, execute their economic-commercial activities in the port and they make land lease contracts with Klaipėda State Seaport Authority. The common task of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority and the private companies working within the port – is to make the port more attractive, safe for vessels to sail, comfortable for handling operations and storage of cargo and able to compete with other eastern Baltic ports. In order to implement this objective port infrastructure is permanently modernized. Modern VTS management, search and rescue systems are created in Klaipėda port, oil spill combating is assured.
